Evanescence by Charline Ronzon-Jaricot

Exploring the Intersection of Scent, Memory, and Emotion in Design

Imagine a moment from your past, vividly brought back to life by a scent: the aroma of a cake baking in your childhood kitchen, the salty breeze of the beach on a summer holiday, or the earthy smell after a rain shower. Scents have this incredible power to whisk us back in time, stirring up memories and emotions with remarkable clarity. This unique relationship between our sense of smell, memory, and emotion opens up fascinating avenues in design, particularly in creating deeper connections and preserving memories.

French designer Charline Ronzon-Jaricot has taken a deep dive into sensory exploration with her project Evanescence, which showcases the unique ways design can engage with our sense of smell. Evanescence is a sensory device that is not just aimed at being a functional tool but also serves as a means to capture and preserve memories in a personal and imaginative manner.

At the core of the Evanescence project is a distinctive mechanism for capturing memories. The design features a delicate inverted glass flask poised above a soft plaster stone. In a moment deemed worthy of preservation, the user breaks the tip of the flask, allowing a single drip of specially formulated liquid scent to be absorbed by the plaster stone below. This simple and profound action encases a fleeting memory in the form of scent, making it possible to revisit and relive through the potent trigger of smell.

Charline's journey to creating Evanescence was fueled by an in-depth examination of olfactory memory and its intricate connections to the brain's memory processes. Recognizing that scents are processed near areas of the brain linked to memory and emotion, she envisioned a unique type of mnemonic device. This device leverages the evocative power of scent to conjure more vivid, emotional, and powerful recollections than those typically evoked by visual or auditory cues.

The potential of designing with scent is vast and largely untapped. Beyond personal memories, the realm of olfactory design has much to offer for enhancing the human experience. It holds promise for therapeutic uses, like aiding those with memory impairments, and offers tools for communication, education, and environmental interaction.

The olfactory design also acknowledges the importance of scent in the natural world, suggesting new ways for humans to connect with animals, insects and plants. This approach fosters a deeper appreciation of our environment and promotes a more empathetic and interconnected way of living.

In summary, exploring scent in design is poised to transform how we interact with our memories, communicate emotions, and understand the world around us. By embracing the full spectrum of sensory experiences, design can cultivate more inclusive, meaningful, and emotionally impactful interactions. As we delve further into the uncharted potential of scent, we're not just expanding design's horizons—we're enriching the fabric of human experience, envisioning a realm where every sense plays a role in the interplay among our memories, emotions, and shared environments, paving a path for a more sensorially enriched existence.
